‘I have not been approached to fill in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin tour, but that isn’t to say I won’t be,’ singer says.By Chris Harris

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he’s been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.
Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn’t take part in the tour.
“I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn’t to say I won’t be,” Cornell told MTV News. “I’ve heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it’s just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour.”
Cornell’s denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. “They did it for fun,” Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show “Todd N Tyler Radio Empire.” “I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert.”
Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London’s O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.
According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, ” ‘We’re all rehearsed, we’re ready to go. Here’s a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don’t do it, we’re going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].’ ”
“And he can sing the sh– out of Zeppelin,” Snider added. “They’re going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, ‘OK,’ and step in.”
In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. “We are trying out a couple of singers,” he said. “We want to do it. It’s sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there.”
But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren’t interested in finding a Plant clone. “It’s got to be right,” he said. “There’s no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don’t want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard.”
Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn’t see it that way.
“It makes me happy that there’s this perception that I have a group of fans that I’m now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be,” he said. “But I’ve been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I’d done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren’t necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.
“It feels like I’ve done this so many times that when it’s presented to me as being a departure, I feel that’s a misconception,” he added. “I feel like that’s my theme at this point.”

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.By James Montgomery

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago’s Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane’s Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.
To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend … until you realize that they’re made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.
According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell’s request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.
Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early “promo” videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).
The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like “Scumbag Blues,” “Mind Eraser (No Chaser),” “Caligulove” and “Interlude w/Ludes,” sounded pretty much how you’d expect, given the band’s pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as “fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty” — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, “both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Jim DeRogatis.
It’s not known if Monday’s Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they’ll have an album out in October.
Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band’s official-looking Web site and the Metro’s online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group’s first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

‘If time allows, there will definitely be new music,’ Robert DeLeo adds of STP’s future.By Chris Harris
Stone Temple Pilots’ Robert DeLeo and Scott Weiland
Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images
There are a number of reasons why Stone Temple Pilots decided to reunite after nearly five years apart — some are obvious, and others, not so much.
Of course, the financial windfall of reviving the grunge stalwarts for an extensive U.S. tour was too good to pass up, and bassist Robert DeLeo readily admits as much. And then there are the fans, the ones who had been with STP since the very beginning as well as those who discovered the band only after it first split back in 2003 and who, woefully, have yet to catch the Pilots live.
On a more personal level, though, Stone Temple Pilots’ resurrection was purely selfish, and very much an anticipatory (not to mention optimistic) move on the band’s part: If, after the months and months of rumors and denials, there ever is a full-on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, STP wanted to be ready to offer their services as an opening act.
“Believe me, that was one of the reasons,” laughed DeLeo. “We thought, ‘We should get together now, in case Zeppelin does tour.’ I’m serious, man. That would be one hell of a bill: STP and Led Zeppelin. I mean, we could play a doghouse, out in the middle of the ocean, and if I got to play with Zeppelin, that would be a highlight of my life.”
Yes, DeLeo — and the rest of the band — had several reservations about raising STP from the dead — a feat DeLeo jokingly referred to as “Mission Impossible.” For the band’s members, the idea of regrouping was terrifying at first, but with time, the boys settled their differences and tried to think positive.
“For me, it was about putting down some of the things that I was used to getting bitten by,” explained the bassist — who, with guitar-playing brother Dean DeLeo, has been collaborating with Peter Frampton on material for his next LP. “After you get bitten, it’s hard to go back. I wanted to go into this with an open frame of mind and a positive attitude and just have fun with it. We should have fun with it, which God knows we didn’t always have with our career when we were younger. If that’s all I can say, and that’s what I can get out of this reunion, great.
“I think I speak for all of us when I say there’s a lot of unfinished business that we didn’t get around to the first go,” he continued. “Enough time has gone by, and it feels really good to be back. I don’t really want to put too much thought into how it feels — I’m just kind of going with it and keeping a good positive attitude about it. I just needed to get over the things that we all needed to get over, and that’s been working so far. If everyone shows up and does this thing, I think it’s going to be really amazing.”
DeLeo claims that during recent rehearsals, STP were “sounding as good as ever,” and he credits sobriety as part of the reason the band’s in tip-top shape.
“My brother’s going on four years of sobriety,” he said. “We have a lot more clarity in the band now, and I think with clarity comes appreciation. I saw that the other night, when we played [a secret gig in Los Angeles]. I saw it in my eyes, and in the eyes of the rest of the band. There’s a lot more rock in this band now.”
As for an STP record, DeLeo is not 100 percent sure that’s going to happen. The goal for STP over the next few weeks, he said, is to reacquaint themselves with their songbook and prepare for their return to the road. Once the band is back in that mindset, the bassist said new STP material is very possible.
“I’ve always got stuff written, and there’s always a long list of songs that are always there — it’s a matter of timing,” DeLeo said. “If time allows, there will definitely be new music. I think it would be silly not to release new music. I’d like to believe we still have a writing relationship, but the first step is getting reacquainted with what we know.”
While STP were on hiatus, frontman Scott Weiland teamed up with Velvet Revolver, and the DeLeo brothers joined forces with Filter’s Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone — who are now on hiatus after releasing a poorly received self-titled LP. Does DeLeo foresee an AOA reunion somewhere down the line?
“You never know,” he said. “It’s just like STP — I didn’t know if I was going to return. Whether we get back together and do anything, I think we made a great record, bottom line. That’s all that matters to me. If we make another one, I want to make sure it’s great, and that applies to STP and anything I do. But I was pretty heartbroken over [the feeble response to AOA's album].”

Usher will certainly have fans saying “OMG” when he hits the stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, but it isn’t the first time he’s had VMA viewers shouting his lyrics.
The R&B superstar got his first taste of what it was like to perform at the VMAs in Los Angeles in 1998 when he played the pre-show, taking the stage in a leather, graffiti-print jacket and leather tuxedo pants. Usher’s performance back then was incredibly low-fi, having only a few dancers behind him dressed like the ones in his “My Way” clip, which was nominated for a VMA that year.

Singer also calls breakdown during Michael Jackson tribute his ‘ultimate apology.’By Gil Kaufman
Chris Brown and Usher

Rumors have been swirling that Chris Brown is planning to tour with pal Usher. And even though reps for both singers declined to comment on the possible joint outing, the singers have been stoking the hype machine with provocative tweets for weeks.
On Tuesday, Brown finally responded to the reports during an appearance on BET’s “106 & Park” show to promote his part in the film “Takers” and talk about his single from the movie, “Deuces.”
First the bad news: It’s not happening. Though it could come together in the future, right now Brown said he’s focused on his own career, which has sputtered in the wake of his guilty plea for felony assault of former girlfriend Rihanna.
“At first we were talking about it, but I think maybe something in the future. But right now, I’m just doing the whole Chris Breezy thing,” he said, polling the screaming audience for interest in either a solo or joint tour. Brown rolled out a short theater swing in support of the slow-selling Graffiti album last fall, but has not staged a larger tour to date and was barred from taking the outing overseas by British immigration officials due to his felony plea.
The rumors of the Usher/Breezy jaunt were first sparked by a joint appearance in late July at Reggae SumFest in Jamaica, during which they sang and danced together and were joined by reggae star Elephant Man. A few weeks later, the pair began teasing a possible co-headlining tour, with Brown tweeting, “What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?”
That speculation went into overdrive when producer Bryan-Michael Cox said on Jermaine Dupri’s “Living the Life” YouTube show that the tour was definitely on. “Usher and the boy Chris Brown are going on tour, y’all know that, right?” Cox said. Dupri immediately replied, “They might not know that.” But after the cat was let out of the bag, Cox admitted, “I might’ve just gave y’all some exclusive sh–.”
Cox later backpedaled, tweeting that he was drunk when he dropped the news and was just “talking crazy,” adding, “I don’t know for a fact that THAT tour is happening. But it would be dope.”
Reps for both singers did not respond to multiple requests for comment about the possible co-headlining tour, and no confirmation was ever given on plans for the outing.
Brown was also asked on Tuesday about his now-famous teary meltdown during a Michael Jackson tribute at the BET awards in June, and he explained why he got so emotional during the event.
“A lot of people don’t know, I was going to see Michael Jackson the day he died,” said Brown, who has long talked about his admiration for the late King of Pop. “I was on my way to the Staples Center to see him [the day he died] … When I heard ‘Man in the Mirror,’ the words started speaking to me in my personal life. It just touched me. It wasn’t fake. I know people were trying to put extras on it, but everything was genuine. That was my ultimate apology, hands down.”

Lady Gaga’s millions of fans have another title to call their Mother Monster: Queen of Twitter.
After steadily gaining on Britney Spears, who until recently was the most-followed user on the social-networking site, Gaga surpassed her fellow pop supernova over the weekend by landing over 5.7 million followers. At press time, Gaga’s Twitter army clocked in at 5,726,168 deep, besting Brit, who had 5,696,275 followers. Just days ago, the chart-toppers were neck-and-neck, with Spears boasting 5,646,028 Twitter peeps to Gaga’s 5,635,460.
When Gaga learned she had dethroned Spears, she took to the Internet to thank the people who made it all possible: her fans. In a video posted online, Gaga doles out heaps of “monster” love to her followers for solidifying her digital dominance.
Sporting a lace headpiece adorned with a sequined Twitter logo and an ornamental Gaga-fied version of the site’s familiar bird symbol, the singer addressed her nearly 6 million followers.
“Hello world, this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter,” said the singer, with a flourish of an illuminated scepter and a sprinkle of glitter; a move that was part-Elizabethan royalty and part-Glinda the Good Witch. “I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen.”
The singer then wished her Twitter-dom only the most enjoyable of experiences when logging onto the micro-blogging site.
“May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting,” Gaga said wistfully. “May you never have carpal tunnel.”
The “Alejandro” singer, who filmed the clip backstage at her Monster Ball Tour stop in Tacoma, Washington, promised to keep the Twitter nonsense to a minimum. “I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenanigans,” Gaga said. “And I vow to always tweet and tweet again.”
Before signing off, Gaga left her legions of viral fans with a few words of encouragement.
“Just remember that I love you,” Gaga said. “And love you yourself. Because little monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball.”

Justin Bieber currently has a lot on his plate. He’s on tour. He’s working on a book and a movie. He’s prepping the release of his next single, “U Smile.” And he just wrapped shooting his cameo on “CSI.” But that doesn’t mean he isn’t taking time to give back.
MTV News caught up with the teen star on Friday night at Usher’s New Look Foundation’s first World Leadership Awards in Atlanta. He was excited to use his celebrity to bring attention to the charity, as well as his voice to bring some tunes to the party.
“You know, I’m really excited to be here to support Usher, my mentor, and his New Look Foundation. I’m here [and] I’m performing tonight. I’m also helping out another charity,” he shared on the red carpet. “It’s called Pencils of Promise. It’s all about giving back and helping out kids that need education. It’s really important that I’m able to help out other kids. I’m a kid myself, so it means a lot to me.”
While he tweeted his intention to release “U Smile” as a single very soon, at the event, he kept his plans rather vague. “Musically, the next thing you’re gonna hear from me is I might be putting out a single in the next couple months,” he said. “I’m always making hits.”
Bieber also recently added a new job to his résumé. He will be the latest celebrity face for Proactiv acne treatment. “I’m definitely someone who suffers from acne,” he says on the Proactiv website. “My parents got acne when they were growing up. And I’m determined to keep myself clear. If I got a face full of breakouts, I would definitely feel really self-conscious and not wanna do photo shoots, not wanna be singing.”

Usher’s personal life — or public speculation about what has happened behind closed doors — has often figured prominently in the singer’s work. Fans ate up the 2004 Confessions LP, which dropped amid rumors that Usher had stepped out on ex-girlfriend Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. Similarly, the singer had endured whispers about his reportedly rocky marriage to stylist Tameka Foster before his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, debuted at #1 this year.
On the heels of the release of Versus, an extension of Raymond, the R&B crooner opened up about why he wasn’t able to make it work with Foster.
“We’re two different people and we have two different goals,” Usher told People. “It just was never going to work out 100 percent.”
Just like he did with his monster album Confessions, the ATL singer turned the heartbreak into hits.
“My music is about where I am at the time,” Usher explained. “In Raymond v. Raymond, I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and
I was suddenly a single father.”
Continuing his tradition of mining his personal life for inspiration, Usher said that Versus is “about being a dating father.”
Earlier this year, the buzz surrounding his relationship with Foster ramped up when Usher’s track “Papers,” a song about ending a marriage by signing off on divorce documents, hit airwaves. However, Usher told MTV News in March that while the track wasn’t inspired by a real-life situation, it unfortunately became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
“When the song was recorded, I wasn’t divorced,” Usher said. “It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at six in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn’t know how realistic it would become. I didn’t know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that’s like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality.”

There’s a reason Lady Gaga doesn’t ever seem to want to wrap up her globe-trotting Monster Ball Tour: It’s a moneymaking machine.
Billboard is reporting that, by the time the curtain finally falls on the Ball — which kicked off in November 2009 and is scheduled to run until at least April 2011 — it will have grossed nearly $200 million worldwide.
It’s a huge number, to be sure, and it’s more proof that Gaga has ascended to the upper echelon of touring acts. In 2009, U2’s 360 Tour was the year’s top-grossing jaunt, raking in more than $300 million, according to Billboard. Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour was at #2, with receipts of more than $220 million. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band landed at #3, grossing more than $156 million.
In the nearly 10 months it’s been on the road, Gaga’s Monster Ball has made stops in North America, Europe, the U.K., Asia and Australia. And a spokesperson for Live Nation Entertainment, which produced U2’s and Madonna’s tours — and also serves as the producer on the Monster Ball — told Billboard that Gaga’s tremendous touring success only serves as further proof that she’s arrived on the scene and has seized the public’s consciousness.
“It’s an opportunity,” Live Nation global touring chairman Arthur Fogel said. “As an artist with that kind of talent and vision emerges, it creates a lot of excitement, and ticket sales worldwide demonstrate that people are really excited to see the show.
“Over the course of the next many months, we’re trying to play to as many people in as many places as possible,” he added. “It’s an across-the-board home run.”

Gaga is virtually unrecognizable as ‘Jo Calderone’ in Vogue Hommes Japan.By Jocelyn Vena
Lady Gaga (file)

Lady Gaga has had some eye-catching magazine covers — she’s appeared wearing everything from lingerie to pretty much nothing at all. And for her latest, she’s bound to have lots of people talking once again. Gaga posed as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, for her gender-bending covers for Vogue Hommes Japan, out September 5. On one cover, Gaga, as Calderone, wears her hair like Elvis Presley and rocks a white shirt and black trousers. Another version simply shows a close-up of Calderone’s face, seen mostly in shadow.
The covers were posted to Gaga’s stylist Nicola Formichetti’s website, along with interview bites that Gaga conducted as Calderone, who is purportedly from Sicily. He says in the September issue, “[My occupation is] mechanic for my dad’s business. This is the first time I’ve had my picture taken. Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken.”
The interview also teases Calderone’s dream to own his own mechanic shop. “I’d love to own my own car shop. I have a bunch of my own ‘muscle’ cars,” he reveals. “Maybe if I take some more pictures, I can afford it.”
The photos first hit the Internet months ago and the speculation was in fact that it was Gaga on the cover. The shoot was styled by Formichetti and shot by Nick Knight, who apparently introduced Calderone to Gaga. “I met her at a shoot Nick Knight was doing,” he recalls. “She’s f—in’ beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, ‘Don’t be baby, you were born this way.’ I took her out after. The rest is private.”

Madame Tussauds asks ‘little monsters’ to suggest their favorite outfits for upcoming replicas.By Gil Kaufman
Lady Gaga
Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images
Lady Gaga’s whole existence sometimes feels like a living, breathing, bleeding, gender-bending work of art. Now, Madame Tussauds is planning to spend major bucks to turn the international pop sensation into a life-size waxwork.
According to a spokesperson for the New York branch of Madame Tussauds, the popular tourist attraction in Times Square is working on a Gaga figure that should be ready by year’s end. And here’s the best part:
“We’re open to hearing from fans about which looks they want,” said the spokesperson, encouraging Gaga’s “little monsters” to visit NYCWax.com to weigh in on which of Gaga’s many signature styles they would like to see immortalized in wax. While the spokesperson could not comment on a report in a British tabloid that Tussauds is spending more than $1.5 million on the Gaga figures, they did clarify that “many” but not all nine global outlets will get their own Gaga. It is also not yet known if all the Gagas will sport the same look or have different outfits.
The museum is legendary for making wax replicas of the rich and famous, from President Obama and Justin Timberlake to Marilyn Monroe, Brad Pitt, Derek Jeter, former “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell, Madonna and Beyoncé.
The singer, who is up for a record 13 Moonmen at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, gave Tussauds yet another possibility this week when she set aside female things and posed as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, for the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. The magazine, which hits newsstands September 5, features a cover shot of Gaga as Calderone with an Elvis pompadour, white shirt and black trousers.
Which of Gaga’s looks do you think Tussauds should immortalize in wax? Leave your comments below!

Rock legend’s official site calls document claiming that Bowie and Gaga would work together a ‘hoax.’By Gil Kaufman
David Bowie
Photo: Virgin
Lady Gaga has often spoken about her love for chameleonic rock icon David Bowie and his gender-bending, glitter-splashed style. Last week, when rumors emerged on a Gaga fansite that the Thin White Duke would be working on Gaga’s upcoming album, fans of both artists were understandably intrigued, excited and a bit skeptical.
But Bowie’s official website has denied rumors that he would lend his legendary croon to a song reportedly titled “Vinyl.” The statement, written by the site’s news editor, read in part: “When this tall story first surfaced a few days ago it was denied as a hoax in an update to the same article, and we thought that would be the end of it. I guess some folk see what they want to see though.”
The scanned document that popped up last Thursday, which bears the hoax-y title “confirmation of recorded music,” also lists Gaga collaborator RedOne as one of the album’s producers and engineers. Also named on the fake list are famed R&B producer Teddy Riley and his daughter Taja, as well as former Gaga collaborator Fernando Garibay (Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears). Song titles cited include “Hooker on a Church Corner” and “Scream Loud.”
“The rumor that David Bowie has been working with Lady Gaga seems to have taken off,” continued the statement on Bowie’s site. “The hoax was started by some bright spark or other with the above forgery … However, in a nutshell, the suggestion that David Bowie is producing and participating in the production of Lady Gaga’s next album is untrue and a hoax.”
Gaga has kept a tight lid on the details about her second full-length studio effort. In an interview with i-D, she said, “The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it … The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation.
I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.”
Though she’s had a close, hit-heavy relationship with RedOne, Gaga promised that she’s updating her sound on the still-untitled album with a slate of new producers who she’s declined to identify.
“I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them,” she said of her new album’s production team. “So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.”

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for ‘American Idol’ rock night.By Gil Kaufman
Adam Lambert performs “Whole Lotta Love” on “American Idol” on Tuesday
Photo: R. Mickshaw/Getty Images/ Fox
Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That’s the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin’s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, “Whole Lotta Love.” And that’s before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”
That’s the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on “American Idol” rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” in 2004.
The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, “Love” was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called “You Need Love,” which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin’s version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin’ Wolf, “Back Door Man” and “Shake For Me,” nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966’s “You Need Loving” from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin’s first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band’s only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his “You Need Love,” and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune — which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show “Top of the Pops” in the 1970s and ’80s — has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train’s Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane’s Addiction.

Singer poses on manga-inspired Pop cover.By James Dinh
Britney Spears on the cover of <i>Pop</i>
Photo: J-Pop
From schoolgirl to toxic temptress, Britney Spears has played many characters throughout the years. But the singer took a very different approach for her photo spread in the upcoming issue of the U.K.’s Pop magazine by channeling her inner manga character. In the issue, the pop princess dished about the possibilities of a Lady Gaga collaboration and working with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami for the anime-inspired cover.
Despite Gaga overthrowing Spears as the most-followed celebrity on Twitter, the singer had no hard feelings toward pop’s newest sensation. “I’m a big fan of hers,” she said when asked about working with Gaga. “Anything’s possible!”
A collaboration between the pop stars doesn’t seem out of the question, as Gaga’s mega-hit “Telephone” duet with Beyoncé was originally offered to Spears.
Donning a white wedding dress and a veil with matching gloves, Spears innocently poses in a field of flowers on the cover. In another photo, the singer trades the dress for a leg-baring getup accessorized with a red backpack.
Spears’ manga-style shoot was shot by Todd Cole with art direction from Takashi Murakami, who is often referred to as the “Andy Warhol of Japan.” While the spread strays from the singer’s typical styling, the pop star enjoyed working with the artist. “I loved working with Takashi,” she said. “I especially liked how he took high-end fashion and incorporated it with Japanese manga.”
The singer’s tour to Japan was what originally piqued her interest in Japanese culture. “We looked at a lot of characters and artwork before we shot, so I could get a feel for what he was looking for,” she explained. “I was in Japan on my past promo tour, and I loved it.”
Editor in Chief Dasha Zhukova spoke to Style.com about the singer’s Japanese treatment: “She’s feminine, sassy, strong-willed, determined: all the things a great Pop icon should be. Couple that with some Japanese swimsuits and a Rodarte wedding gown, and I think she is pretty much Pop personified!”
Spears couldn’t wait to share her excitement for her photo shoot with fans. The pop star took to Twitter, saying, “I just saw the photos for the first time and they are beautiful. Comes out Sept. 1st. Thanks @TakashiPom — Britney.”
Aside from gracing the cover of Pop magazine, the singer has already filmed a cameo for her “Glee” tribute episode and is working on completing the follow-up to 2008’s Circus.

One lucky fan, who traveled all the way from Australia, got two free tickets for their SPW devotion.By Matt Elias
Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter

LOS ANGELES — Semi Precious Weapons are known for their unabashed stage presence, flamboyant wardrobe and, maybe most of all, undying love for their fans. So when Lady Gaga’s opening act hit Los Angeles for the Monster Ball Tour, the band invited MTV News along to witness firsthand a pre-show tweet-n-greet, with a very precious prize at the end.
SPW frontman Justin Tranter explained how it all goes down: “Every single day, we announce where we’re going to have our Semi Precious Street Corner. So we show up somewhere every day to give away two tickets, free tickets, to the Monster Ball.”
By the time the band tweeted their location from backstage and walked across the street from the Staples Center, 30 die-hard fans were already lined up. What followed was an energetic, impromptu trivia game to award tickets to the Weapons’ biggest fan.
Once they arrived, Tranter took command of the crowd to narrow down three finalists.
“What is the fourth song on our album?” Tranter asked.
” ‘Statues of Ourselves,’ ” finalist #1 answered.
Tranter continued: “Finish the sentence: ‘Rock and roll never looked so … ‘ ”
“Beautiful!” screamed finalist #2.
“Last question: What is his name?” Tranter asked, while pointing at the band’s bassist.
“Cole!” finalist #3 shouted.
With the lightning round over, Tranter had one more declaration before he picked the lucky fan. “Now, listen, you can’t hate me if you don’t win tickets, because I love you all, I love you all — but one of you is going to get two tickets,” Tranter said. “OK, this last part gets really fancy. Are you ready?”
He then broke into the playground-worthy selection method “eeny, meeny, miny, moe,” landing on a tearful super-fan who traveled all the way from Australia.
How would you have done on SPW’s trivia test? Let us know in the comments!

‘It’s gonna be hard taking the Biebs down,’ the ‘Tik Tok’ singer tells MTV News about her Best New Artist nom.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi
Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News
Ke$ha will storm this September’s Video Music Awards with four nominations — she picked up three for her infectious breakthrough single “Tik Tok,” as well as one for “My First Kiss,” her duet with 3Oh!3. But the singer isn’t quite sure she’ll be able to wrest the Best New Artist Moonman from windswept heartthrob Justin Bieber.
“It’s gonna be hard taking the Biebs down,” she told MTV News. “It’s gonna be hard, but my fans — we can do it!”
Justin Bieber isn’t Ke$ha’s only stiff competition on September 12; the brash singer is also up for Best Female Video against heavy hitters like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. But she hopes that her fans will party all over the ballot box and sweep her to victory.
“I have no idea! Gaga and Beyoncé and Taylor Swift — everybody in there I respect, so it’s kind of like I have no disses to throw,” she said. “That’s a tough category. ['Tik Tok'] was my first video, so that really is exciting. I had no idea what I was doing. It was my first time making a video, so it’s really kind of cool. I’m excited to see if I and a chance, but I think we can take them. Can’t we? I’m down to try!”
After she found out about the nominations, she tweeted her excitement, saying, “I don’t even know what to say. I’m so grateful and thankful and stunned and excited. I can’t even put into words actually how much this means to me … thank you to every single one of my fans … I’m f—ing losing my sh–. I’m so stoked!!!!!”
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

Drummer admits he doesn’t know what will come of ‘new material.’By Chris Harris
Jason Bonham
Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images
On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit’s GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he’d be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that’s not the only thing he said.
Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he’s been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they’ve been “trying to do some new material and writing.”
It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London’s O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year’s show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.
Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he’s been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep’s “Whole Lotta Love” at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.
“I’ve been over [to England] a couple of times,” Bonham said. “I’ve been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do … some new material and some writing. I don’t know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It’s my life. It’s what I’ve dreamed about doing.”
He said it’s still too early to tell what will become of these “jam” sessions, but admitted that the “possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2.” Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, “lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out,” but added that recording with Zep is “something I’ve always wanted to do.”
Bonham noticeably didn’t mention frontman Plant’s name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page’s management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones’ management could not be reached by press time.

‘I have not been approached to fill in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin tour, but that isn’t to say I won’t be,’ singer says.By Chris Harris
Chris Cornell
Photo: MTV News

Pop star tells i-D magazine she wants to ‘create the anthem for my generation.’By James Dinh
Lady Gaga
Photo: Getty Images
Lady Gaga may have caused a stir with her recent talk of sex and drug use, but the singer knows that in the end it all boils down to the music. In the pre-Fall issue of i-D magazine that surfaced online on Friday (August 13), the songstress opens up about what she has planned for her upcoming album.
“The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it,” Gaga said of her still-untitled album. “The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.”
While the singer has frequently worked with producers like RedOne (“Bad Romance” and “Just Dance”), Gaga plans to keep her sound fresh with a line of new producers on the forthcoming project. But she’s keeping them a secret, saying, “I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them. So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.”
And for those who were wondering if the Elton John-esque ballad “You and I” was an indication of the project’s sound, Gaga said, “It’s not totally indicative of the new album sound; it’s just a really big rock-and-roll hit.”
The pop star confirmed that the song, which she first performed at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball in June, will appear on the LP. “I do have these hopes that it could be a great rock crossover record, so I’m going to put my producer’s hat on and get it to a place where I feel like it could reach the masses,” she said. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful lyric and melody. I wrote it at the piano I grew up playing in New York.”
Despite the success of Gaga’s collaborations with Beyoncé, she said she’s “not entirely sure” if she’d like to collaborate with anybody this time around. “At this moment, I don’t want to feature anyone; I just want to stand on my own two feet,” she said.
But if the pop star does change her mind, there’s one female rapper who will please her legions of fans: Nicki Minaj. When i-D asked the singer if she could do them a favor and collaborate with the Young Money darling, Gaga was pensive, saying, “OK, I’ll think about it.”
And as the Lady Gaga train keeps on rolling, the pop star had a rather interesting response as to how she plans to create longevity in her career: “I will always have as much penis as I do vagina. And, no, I’m not going to explain that; it’s part of the answer.”

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.By James Montgomery with MTV News staff
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant accept the award for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards on Sunday
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
“I’m bewildered,” Robert Plant said onstage as he accepted the Grammy Album of the Year award with Alison Krauss on Sunday night. “In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it’s a good way to spend a Sunday.”
He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night’s show, is in many ways the perfect Grammy album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker’s dozen of time-tested standards.
You’re probably familiar with Robert Plant from his Led Zeppelin days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett’s work on the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don’t know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she’s won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.
Really, she’s the key to Sand’s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.
And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album’s finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she’s getting bluesy on Little Milton’s “Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson” or entwining with Plant’s husky voice on songs like “Please Read the Letter” and Roly Salley’s winsome “Killing the Blues,” she more than carries her end of the bargain.
And perhaps that’s also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It’s a testament to his work that he’s often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project … and it’s certainly justified.
To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — “Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)” took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.
One expert was surprised not by the album’s success, but by the fact that it’s actually quite a good album.
“At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. … Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn’t have to be any good, you know?” New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. “Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards.”

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.By James Montgomery with MTV News staff

‘It was pretty amazing,’ frontman Justin Tranter tells MTV News of Gaga jumping on drums.By Kyle Anderson

CHICAGO — In the hours before Lady Gaga’s Friday night (August 6) set to close out the first night of Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park, the ubiquitous, world-conquering pop star made an early appearance onstage as part of the set by Semi Precious Weapons (her friends and the opening act on her Monster Ball Tour).
Semi Precious Weapons frontman Justin Tranter breathlessly recounted the story while standing just in front of the stage where Gaga would be performing her full set in a matter of hours.
“She came to watch us perform. She stood on the side of the stage, and then during the song ‘Magnetic Baby,’ she started playing drums with Dan,” he told MTV News. “Then she started singing backup vocals, then her and I made out, and then she stagedove and then I joined her while she stage-dove. And then we made out while stagediving. And then she left. It was pretty amazing.”
The visit certainly came as a surprise to the men of Semi Precious Weapons, though it isn’t the first time the two entities have tag-teamed. “She used to get onstage with us all the time, but since she’s so famous, normally it’s not safe for her,” Tranter explained. “But she played the same stage we played three years ago, and I think she was so excited about us playing that stage, and she loves our band so much that she was overwhelmed by the rock and roll and just had to make it happen.”
Tranter also told MTV News that this wouldn’t be the last you would see of Gaga collaborating with the band. “Gaga herself has plans to collaborate with us, both artistically and sexually,” he teased.
After a whirlwind day, Semi Precious Weapons declared themselves the victors of Lollapalooza’s Friday.
“Tonight, in 2010, at Lollapalooza, rock and roll officially is back,” Tranter said. “After Gaga is done, between our set and her set, they should just cancel the whole thing.”
Are you looking forward to a collaboration between Gaga and SPW? Tell us in the comments!
